Productivity versus investment: what each configuration gains and gives up

The difference is in how many faces of the profile are drilled at once. A single-spindle machine drills one face at a time and repositions the part for the next; a three-spindle one works the three faces —web and flanges— simultaneously, multiplying productivity. Which one suits is not a matter of better or worse, but of production volume.

One spindle: medium production

A single-spindle machine drills one face of the profile, turns or repositions the beam, and drills the next. It is the reasonable solution for medium-sized structural steel shops, where volume does not justify three spindles and a tight investment rules. It gives up speed —each face is a step—, but covers a moderate workflow well with a simpler, more economical machine.

Three spindles: high production

A three-spindle machine attacks the three faces of the profile at the same time. This eliminates repositioning between faces and multiplies the number of profiles drilled per shift, which is what high production needs. The trade-off is a higher investment: it is justified when volume is high and sustained, and drilling is the bottleneck.

The question that decides

The choice comes down to one question: how many profiles per shift do you need to drill, and sustained? For medium volume, one spindle pays for itself; for high production with holes on all three faces, three spindles are the sensible investment. CONCLUSIÓN

There is no better one: there is one for each volume

Neither one nor three spindles is «better» in the abstract: each configuration solves a level of production. One spindle wins on simplicity and investment for medium volume; three spindles win on productivity for sustained high production. Defining the profiles per shift well is what tips the balance one way or the other.
