What subsystems make up a blast room?
A blast room is not a single piece of equipment, but the integration of several subsystems working together. Understanding how it is composed helps to size an installation and to communicate better with the supplier when planning it:
• Blast room enclosure: a sealed space kept under negative pressure by air extraction, with an anti-abrasive interior lining and adequate lighting for good visibility.
• Part handling: the system that moves or holds the part —rail cars, overhead conveyor, rollers, forklift— according to its size and geometry.
• Abrasive recovery: the way the abrasive returns to the circuit, which can be manual, mechanical or pneumatic depending on the abrasive and the production volume.
• Abrasive purification: separates dust, scale and fines from the reusable abrasive before reloading it, keeping blasting quality constant.
• Pressure unit and operator protection: the pressure pot that projects the abrasive and the positive-pressure safety equipment for whoever works inside.
• Dust extraction and filtration: the collector that keeps interior visibility and clean air.
• Controls and instrumentation: the console that commands and interlocks the start and stop of all systems in the correct and safe sequence.
These subsystems combine in different ways according to the part, the process and the volume. The way they are chosen and configured —especially the abrasive recovery system and the mode of operation, manual or automatic— defines the exact room for each application. That configuration is explained in detail on the blast rooms page.
