Can a dust collector explode?

When a collector is a risk and how it is protected
Yes. A dust collector is a closed volume with fine dust in suspension: if that dust is combustible and an ignition source appears, a deflagration can occur. That is why, when the process dust is combustible, the collector is not installed as is: it is installed with explosion protection.
Why the collector is a critical point
It is not that the collector fails: it is that it brings together all the risk conditions in one place. It is the point of the installation where the finest dust is concentrated, in suspension and inside a closed volume — exactly the scenario a deflagration needs. Added to that are possible ignition sources arriving through the duct, such as sparks from a cutting or grinding process. What determines whether there is risk
It depends on the dust, not on the equipment. Combustible metal dusts —aluminum, magnesium, titanium— and combustible organic dusts —grain, flour, wood, food, some plastics— pose a risk. Inert dusts, such as the iron oxide from blasting with metal abrasives, sand or garnet, do not. The difference is not estimated by eye: it is determined with a dust hazard analysis, which is always the starting point.
How a collector is protected
There are two paths depending on the type of dust. For combustible dusts captured dry, the collector is protected with deflagration venting —which releases the pressure in a controlled way toward a safe place— and with explosion isolation in the ducts, which keeps the flame front from spreading to the rest of the plant; this is how it is done, for example, in grain and port facilities. For combustible metal dusts, the usual path is the wet scrubber, where water removes the ignition risk. A collector is not dangerous in itself: it is dangerous if it captures combustible dust without the right protection. Defining first whether the process dust is combustible, and only then choosing the equipment and its protection, is the correct order.
