INDUSTRIAL FILTRATION

Why the cartridge is the standard and when a bag filter is better

For most dry, fine dust —such as blast cleaning dust— the standard is the cartridge collector: it offers more filtration area in less space, higher efficiency and a more compact unit. The bag filter is reserved for the exceptions: coarse, fibrous, light, moist or hot dust, or high temperatures, where a cartridge would blind. The decision is not a preference: the dust defines it.

The cartridge is the standard for dry, fine dust

The pleated filter media of the cartridge offers a large filtration area in a compact volume, allowing the unit to be installed close to the generation point without taking up productive space. For decades it has been the Western standard for blast cleaning and machining dust, which is dry, fine and non-fibrous. Compressed air pulse-jet cleaning keeps pressure drop stable without stopping production.

The bag filter is for the exceptions

The bag filter is not the standard for blast cleaning —that is a common mistake—. A bag filter is justified when the dust is coarse, fibrous, light or moist, when the dust load is very high, or when the temperature exceeds what a cartridge medium tolerates. In those cases a cartridge would blind quickly; the bag, with its geometry and medium, handles them better.

The real decision: the dust, not the equipment

Choosing between cartridge and bag is not settled by cost or habit, but by the dust characteristics: particle size, temperature, moisture, abrasiveness and load. Once the dust is defined, the right technology almost chooses itself. The detail of that decision, with all the criteria, is developed in the cartridge or bag filter article.

CONCLUSION

First the dust, then the collector

In the vast majority of blast cleaning applications, the cartridge is the right answer for efficiency and space. The bag filter comes in when the dust has a characteristic —coarse, fibrous, moist or hot— that the cartridge does not handle well. Before choosing the equipment, the dust must be characterized: that is the order that avoids buying the wrong collector.
