Fixed or portable dust collector?

INSTALLATION AND USE

When a mobile extractor suits and when a fixed system does

It depends on how many points generate dust and whether they are fixed or move. A fixed or centralized system suits dust that is always generated at the same points and in sustained volume; a portable one, when the task is occasional, itinerant or low-frequency.

When a portable unit fits

A single point at a time, cleaning or maintenance tasks, repair and assembly in different locations. It is brought to the point where the dust is generated, with no construction or ducting. It is the practical option for work that moves around.

When a fixed or centralized system fits

Several simultaneous stations and continuous production. Better cost per cubic meter at scale and less operator intervention, in exchange for a fixed installation with ducting.

A typical case: welding fumes

It is one of the most frequent applications of the portable unit, with its own logic of capture at the source and operator health, developed in the welding fume extraction article.

CONCLUSION

It's not “one is better than the other”

It is not “one is better than the other”: you choose according to the process's dust-generation pattern. Many shops combine both: fixed at the permanent stations, portable for the tasks that move.
