Mechanical descaling — the ecological and more cost-effective alternative to acid

Mechanical descaling by shot blasting is the ecological and economic alternative to chemical acid pickling for mill scale removal from steel wires, bars, plates, tubes and billets. These are its main advantages:

1. No liquid effluents or water treatment

The shot blasting process is completely dry. It generates no spent acid baths that must be neutralized and treated before final disposal — one of the most significant operating and environmental costs of chemical pickling.

2. Greater roughness and better coating adhesion

Shot blasting generates a roughness profile on the wire or bar that improves adhesion of wire drawing coatings (soap, phosphate, borax) and subsequent anticorrosive coatings. Chemical pickling leaves a smooth surface without anchor profile.

3. Continuous in-line process

Shot blast machines for mechanical descaling process wires and bars at speeds up to 250 m/min, integrated directly into the wire drawing line. Chemical pickling requires stopping the process for batch treatment.

4. Lower total operating cost

The cost per ton of mechanically descaled material is systematically lower than chemical pickling when total cost is computed: abrasive, energy, maintenance, effluent management and environmental cost.
