Why the mitering head defines what a saw can prepare
The straight cut is made at 90°, perpendicular to the part; the miter cut is made at an angle. The difference matters because most structural joints are not at 90°: they need angled cuts so two profiles fit together, and those cuts are resolved by a mitering head. Whether the saw cuts only straight or also miter completely changes what it can prepare without extra steps.
What each cut does
The straight cut separates the part at 90° and serves to cut to length. The miter cut is made at an angle —single, on one axis, or compound, on two— and is what allows preparing the ends for a welded or bolted joint with no later work. In structural preparation, the miter is not an extra: it is most of the real work.
The mitering head
A saw with a mitering head swivels to cut at 90° and at an angle without moving the part. That avoids repositioning and re-clamping the profile for each angle, which reduces time and —more importantly— improves joint accuracy, because the angle is set by the machine and not by the operator. A saw that only cuts straight forces miters to be prepared on another machine or by hand, with more handling and less precision.
What to look at when specifying
When choosing the saw it is worth defining the range of angles needed and whether the miter is single or compound.
