What should you compare between two shot blasting machines, besides price?

What drives the cost of blasting over the life of the machine

The purchase price is only part of the cost. Over the years, a shot blasting machine consumes abrasive, energy and wear parts, and every shutdown stops production. Two machines that look alike on paper can have very different costs per ton blasted. These are the points worth comparing. For what drives the purchase price, see How much does an industrial shot blasting machine cost?

We started with wear parts

CYM was founded in 1960 and began making cut wire shot in 1965. We have had our own foundry since 1967, and a large share of what we cast was wear parts for other manufacturers' shot blasting machines: that is how we entered the field. We built our first shot blasting machine in 1987. We design our machines with what we learned from seeing how and where they wear.

The material of the wear parts

The blast wheel and the cabinet take the impact of the abrasive all the time, and their material decides how long they last. Our special steel foundry, in Corral de Bustos, Argentina, casts the wear parts in manganese steel (11 to 14 %) and high-chrome steel (64 HRC or more), with chemical composition and heat treatment checked in every batch, under ISO 9001.

We use the same material in the blast wheel and in the cabinet liners: we do not lower the quality in the less demanding areas. When comparing machines, ask what material each wear part is made of, including the liners.

How long does each part last? There is no single number. It depends on the blast wheel power, the size and hardness of the abrasive, what is being blasted (removing sand from castings is far more demanding than cleaning plate) and how the machine is set up. That is why a comparison is only valid under the same working conditions.

The blast wheel and its spare parts

We design and manufacture our own blast wheels. They share a standard design across all our machines, so their wear parts are available immediately. It is explained in detail in Why buy original spare parts?

The purchased components

Motors, gearboxes, controls and pneumatics come from recognized brands such as WEG, SEW, Telemecanique and Festo. They carry their manufacturers' warranty, and their spare parts are available in any country.

Abrasive cleaning and the dust collector

Clean abrasive, free of dust and sand, wears the machine less and leaves a better finish. Our machines separate the fines with an air-wash curtain separator, and the dust collector is sized for each blast cabinet: see Why choose a good dust collection system?

Commissioning, training and warranty

A CYM technician supervises commissioning at the customer's plant, in any country, and trains the operators on operation and maintenance. All our machines carry a one-year warranty against defects in material or workmanship.

Track record and returning customers

We have more than 2,500 machines installed in more than 25 countries, with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification. Many customers have come back to buy again, among them Scania Argentina, Volkswagen Argentina, companies of the Techint group, Tega Industries, Fundilag (Mexico) and Truper, which has been adding tunnels since 2014.
