INDUSTRIAL DUST COLLECTION

Dust — why is dust collection important in shot blasting?

The dust collection system is an integral part of the shot blasting process, not an optional accessory. Every shot blast machine generates dust during the process: mill scale, rust, part contaminants and fine worn abrasive particles. If that dust is not efficiently captured, it contaminates the shot operating mix, reduces process quality, affects operator health and may fail to comply with environmental regulations.

Correct system sizing is the key. An undersized dust collector cannot maintain the necessary negative pressure in the blast chamber, causing dust leaks through machine seals and doors, reduced operator visibility, workplace contamination and greater component wear due to fines in the abrasive circuit.

Dust collection systems for shot blast machines fall into three main technologies. Cartridge collectors — the most widely used in industry — combine high filtration efficiency with low space consumption and simplified maintenance. Bag filters are suitable for large dust volumes with high particle concentration. Wet scrubbers are the solution for dust with explosion risk or when the process generates gases and vapors that cannot be dry-filtered.

The selection of the correct system depends on the air volume to be treated, the concentration and type of dust generated by the specific process, environmental conditions and local regulatory requirements. CYM Materiales offers custom industrial dust collection systems for each machine and process.
