Acid-free scale removal for the wire drawing industry
Wilco mechanical descaling systems remove hot-rolled scale from steel wire rod without the use of acids, preparing the material for wire drawing. Represented by CYM Materiales for Argentina and the region, they are the first choice of wire manufacturers seeking to reduce operating costs, eliminate acid pickling waste and improve the surface quality of the finished product.
All models incorporate the Wilco model 310 scale breaker: three sheaves with tungsten carbide wear rings that bend the wire rod in a controlled manner to break the scale loose from the base metal. Secondary cleaning — air, water, brushing or precoating — varies by model and defines the final surface quality level. Installation is in-line, between the rod payoff and the first drawing die.

Mechanical descaling systems and processes
All models process steel wire rod from 5.5 to 12.7 mm (7/32″ to 1/2″) in diameter with adjustable rod line height from 79 to 104 cm (31″ to 41″).
920 AIR JET DESCALER
- Most economical system: scale breaker + air jet cleaning
- No line speed restriction
- No water or electrical consumption
- Common base plate ensures alignment and easy installation
- Ideal for commodity wire products where the goal is the lowest possible processing cost
1030 WATER JET DESCALER
- Scale breaker + pressurized water jet cleaning
- Maximum speed 4.3 m/s (850 FPM)
- Water jet removes scale fines more effectively than air
- Compact footprint: 1.9 × 1.7 m (75″ × 67″)
- Ideal for standard wire production requiring greater cleaning control
1060 DESCALER + PRECOATER
- Scale breaker + cleaning and precoating in a single pass
- Cleaning/precoating solution at 85°C (185°F) applied through engineered nozzles
- Continuous drying by tungsten carbide air wipe at exit
- Compatible with a wide variety of commercially available lubricant pre-coat compounds
- Ideal for high-carbon steel and tougher-to-draw grades
1250 AUTOMATIC BRUSH DESCALER
- Scale breaker + 8 automatic steel wire brushes
- Advanced electronic controls automatically adjust brush pressure
- Standard commercial brushes — not proprietary, easy to replace
- Processing cost approximately USD 3 per ton
- Ideal for high-quality wire with varying input rod surface conditions
1250 DB DUAL BRUSH DESCALER
- Scale breaker + dual automatic brushing heads — up to 3.3 m/s (650 FPM)
- Highest speed of all brush models: up to 3.3 m/s (650 FPM)
- Dual head for heavy scale, severe corrosion or double oxide layers
- Produces superior surface finish on typical-condition wire rod
- Ideal when drawing speed exceeds 500 FPM or incoming rod condition is unfavorable
1750 AUTOMATIC BRUSH DESCALER + PRECOATER
- Scale breaker + automatic brushing + precoating, PLC controlled
- PLC monitors and automatically compensates for brush wear
- Minimal operator attention during continuous operation
- Produces the cleanest and most consistent descaled rod in the series
- Ideal for the most demanding wire drawing operations in surface quality and lubrication

All models are installed in-line between the rod payoff and the first drawing die. Electrical: 380–440 V 3-phase (all supplies available) except the model 920 which requires no electricity or water.
