How to specify a beam drilling line

Maximum profile, number of spindles and operations: what defines the drilling line
Drilling structural steel beams and profiles is not making a hole: it is executing precise hole patterns for connections and fasteners, often on the three faces of the profile. The drilling line is specified by the largest profile it processes, by how many spindles work at once and by the operations it resolves beyond drilling. This article explains what each variable looks at and why.
The maximum profile defines the machine
The line is sized by the largest beam or profile it will process: the beam height, the flange width and the length. H, I, U profiles and angles define, by their maximum size, the scale of the machine and of the roller conveyor that feeds the part. Defining the real maximum working profile is the starting point, just as with any equipment in the line.
One or three spindles: the productivity decision
The number of spindles defines how much the line produces. One spindle drills one face at a time; three spindles work the three faces of the profile simultaneously, multiplying productivity on parts with holes in the web and flanges. The choice depends on volume and shop type: one spindle is enough for medium production, three spindles are for high production. Which one suits is developed in the corresponding FAQ.
More than drilling: marking, milling, countersinking
A modern line does not only drill. Many add marking —identification and reference lines for assembly—, milling and countersinking, resolving in a single pass operations that used to be separate. Defining which operations are needed beyond drilling avoids buying a machine that falls short or paying for functions that will not be used.
Productivity: positioning and tool change
On a CNC line, the control positions the beam and executes the hole pattern automatically. Automatic part measurement and tool change define the real production rate as much as the spindle: drilling fast is useless if positioning the beam is slow. For continuous production, automating part handling is as decisive as the number of spindles.
In line with cutting
Drilling can be integrated in line with a cutting saw. Together they form the structural steel preparation line: the part is cut to length and drilled in a continuous flow, with no intermediate handling. Specifying a beam drilling line means describing well the largest profile you will process, the production volume and the operations you need.
