LIGHT ABRASIVE BLASTING

What is soda blasting with sodium bicarbonate

Soda blasting with sodium bicarbonate —a form of light abrasive blasting— is an effective, fast and eco-friendly method for cleaning and restoring surfaces by compressed air. CYM Materiales manufactures and supplies the equipment to apply it.

Unlike conventional shot blasting or sandblasting, it uses sodium bicarbonate as the abrasive, whose soft crystals clean without attacking the substrate. That is why it replaces pressure washing, sandblasting and conventional blasting on delicate surfaces, achieving an excellent finish without damaging the material.

How the process works

Sodium bicarbonate particles are driven by compressed air through the equipment and, on hitting the surface, produce an almost immediate cleaning. The process is done in a single pass and generates no contaminants.

Cleaning without damaging the substrate
• The softness of the bicarbonate crystals cleans without attacking the material: it keeps surfaces such as aluminum, stainless steel, brick, stone, marble, fiberglass, seals and plastic in perfect condition.

• On very fragile surfaces, such as glass, it achieves optimal cleaning with no etching effect.

No prior preparation or abrasive recovery
• It requires no prior surface preparation or degreasing: the alkaline nature of bicarbonate also acts on greases and oils.

• The system does not recover the abrasive: each particle works only once, ensuring a consistently uniform result.

• Bicarbonate dissolves easily in fresh water and can be discharged into treatment systems or open water without contaminating, even reducing odors

Advantages of sodium bicarbonate

As a light abrasive, sodium bicarbonate combines cleaning effectiveness with an environmental and safety profile that is hard to match. Its main advantages:

Does not damage the Surface: it removes paint, grease or coatings in a single operation without breaking the metal substrate.
Non-toxic and non-irritant: not by inhalation, contact or ingestion, and it does not irritate eyes or skin (non-toxic per OSHA parameters).

Replaces chemicals: through its action on oils and greases, it avoids the use of many conventional cleaning chemicals.

Spark-free: suitable for sensitive environments such as refineries, chemical plants and grain elevators.

Eco-friendly: biodegradable, water-soluble, non-flammable and with no fume emission.

Practical: used with cold or hot pressurized water, and it uses standard, readily available compressed-air spare parts.

Applications

Thanks to its damage-free cleaning and non-toxic profile, soda blasting is used across very diverse sectors:

Automotive: strips paint from cars and motorcycles and cleans engines without damaging their delicate components; ideal for body shops, machine shops and restoration, removing grease, oil and sediment without affecting parts.
Monument restoration: professional cleaning without causing damage; removes mold, pigmentation, stains and paint from marble, concrete, stone and granite.

Food industry: cleaning of ovens, grills and equipment; since bicarbonate is a food product, it poses no contamination risk.

Construction: removes grease, grime and paint from walls and ceilings, avoiding chemicals, quickly and eco-friendly.

Sensitive environments: suitable for refineries, chemical plants and grain elevators, because it produces no sparks.
