SUCCESS STORY - MEXICO

Tunnel shot blasting machines for forged tools and shovels at Truper, Mexico

Back to News

Truper makes hand tools at its plant in Jilotepec, State of Mexico. Since 2014 it has blasted its forged tools in a CYM tunnel machine, and in 2021 it added two more: one for the forging line and one for the shovel line. That makes three machines from the EST-TUN line, with 28 blast wheels of 30 HP running continuously.

The challenge

Tools leave forging and tempering covered in scale, and they must reach the paint line clean. The parts come in very different shapes and are processed hanging from hooks, in high volume and without stopping the line.
Two conditions shaped the machines:

• Fitting into what was already there. The first tunnel had to work with the conveyor of Truper's paint line, synchronizing the speeds of both conveyors. On the shovel line, the blast machine sits between the tempering furnace and the paint booth.

• Two different jobs. On the forging line, blasting is for cleaning. On the shovel line, the surface treatment is more demanding. That is why the forging tunnels carry 8 blast wheels and the shovel tunnel, 12.

The challenge

The solution

Three continuous tunnel machines with an overhead monorail conveyor and a narrow, tall opening —0.5 m wide by 1.2 to 1.3 m high— designed for hanging tools. It is a custom configuration, smaller than the catalog models of the family.

All three have a double lining in the impact zone —manganese steel plus high-chrome cast iron—, entry and exit vestibules with rubber curtains, abrasive recovery with bucket elevator and separator, and an automatic abrasive loader. The conveyor on the 2021 machines has a 44 m path and hooks rated for 200 kg each.
The shovel tunnel adds HMI control, a variable frequency drive on each blast wheel, vibration sensors with on-screen alerts, automatic adjustment of the abrasive curtain, and communication for remote assistance.

The forging line runs on carbon steel shot. Dust from all three machines is captured by cartridge dust collectors.

A custom loading fixture

On the shovel line, output depends on how many parts fit on each hanger without shadowing each other. During the trials we designed a loading fixture that takes shovels of different sizes, together with a new setting of the wheels' blast pattern, to load more parts per meter of conveyor without compromising the finish.
With that setup, the trials showed a capacity of 17,000 to 51,000 shovels a day over two shifts, depending on shovel size.

Tested before shipping

Both 2021 machines were tested at our plant before shipment, with Truper engineers present and using their own parts. Components were checked against the quotation, along with the control systems and the blasting results, and the final adjustments before dispatch were put in writing.
The 2021 forging tunnel built on seven years of experience with the first one.

Seven years later, back to CYM

Truper ran the first tunnel from 2015 and, when it needed more capacity, came back to CYM for two more machines. Today there are three CYM tunnels at the same plant.
